Custom Cataract Surgery

What is the most appropriate treatment to eliminate cataract?

A cataract is one of the most common eye diseases worldwide and, in recent years, we are seeing how it appears more often in younger people. Regardless of the patient’s age, the loss of vision caused by the cataract alters the rhythm of life of the sufferer and must be treated as soon as it is diagnosed.

In Vithas Eurocanarias Instituto Oftalmológico we have the most advanced technology for cataract, and we can adapt the treatment to the characteristics, age and situation of each patient. In addition, in the same cataract surgery, it is possible to correct refractive defects, such as myopia, far-sightedness or astigmatism. In Vithas Eurocanarias Instituto Oftalmológico we practice Personalized Cataract Surgery.

Why does cataract occur in the eye?

We all have in the eye a lens, which has the mission of focusing the images on the retina, and under normal conditions the lens is transparent. When it becomes opaque it is called a cataract and is usually produced by the passing of the years.

Although there are other causes that develop cataract at earlier ages.

The only treatment to eliminate cataracts is surgery and it develops like this:

    • Once in the operating room, drops of anaesthesia are applied.
    • Next, a laser micro incision of between 1 and 2 mm is performed.
    • The intraocular lens is implanted

This procedure is performed in about 15 minutes, it does not require stitches or bandages and the patient returns home after it.

The patients who come to our centre have the possibility of operating their cataracts by means of a traditional Phacoemulsification procedure or by means of a Femtophaco or Phacolaser Laser procedure that allows the intraocular lens to be implanted by performing a micro incision. In addition, we have the only Intelligent Operating Room in the Canary Islands. A great technological advance that personalizes the surgery for each patient by integrating the technology in the planning and guidance.

To this we have been added a team called the ORA System, integrated into the New Smart Operating Room for cataract surgery. It is an intraoperative aberrometer that performs graduation during surgery to confirm that the lens we plan to implant is really adequate to achieve the best visual results, especially important in patients with astigmatism or who have previously had refractive surgery.

Vithas Eurocanarias Instituto Oftalmológico is an Ophthalmologic Ambulatory Major Surgery Centre equipped with cutting-edge technology for the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and vision defects, with three exclusive operating rooms for eye surgery. We also have a large medical team specialized in solving refractive problems with more than 20 years of experience.
